Reported firearm sighting delays Waterford-Dublin train

A Waterford-Dublin train was delayed by almost an hour tonight after the driver of another service reported seeing two people with what looked like firearms near the tracks.

The pair were spotted by the driver of the 6.35pm Dublin-Waterford train in grass near the line about halfway between Athy, Co Kildare and Carlow town.

When the matter was reported to gardaí, the Heuston-bound 6.25pm service from Waterford was stopped at Carlow station at around 7.30pm.

A Garda search of the area where the suspects had been seen failed to locate anybody. However, it is understood that evidence was found to suggest they had been using a distance marker on the rail line for air rifle target practice.

The Waterford-Dublin service resumed after a stoppage of about 50 minutes in Carlow.
