Charity calls on Government to support older people who live at home

The Alone charity has today urged the Government to stick to its plans of supporting people who wish to stay at home.

One-third of older people living in nursing homes could live at home, with the right supports, the

charity has said.

CEO of Alone, Sean Moynihan, says that older people in the rest of Europe stay at home longer.

"We have nearly 30% more older people in nursing home care compared to our European neighbours," he said.

"This presents a challenge for us to see why is this and what would we all like to do about it?

"It is government policy, Programme for Government, National Ageing Strategy and a HSE service plan that older people be given the choices and support to live at home.

"So what we're looking for is people to look at how that can be implemented."
