SVP labels higher energy levy a 'regressive tax'

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has slammed a higher-than-expected increase in the PSO levy on electricity bills.

Last month the energy regulator signalled the charge would rise by 47%, but the final figure comes in at 50%.

That means the average customer will now pay €73 a year, inclusive of VAT.

The Saint Vincent de Paul has blasted the increase as a "regressive tax" that low income earners do not have the ability to pay.

The Public Service Obligation Levy is a charge from energy suppliers to supplement the cost of programmes like renewable energy, peat use, and energy security. It is a government-mandated charge overseen by the Commission for Energy Regulation.
