The body of Sarah Staunton, 28, was discovered at a house in a rural area near Mayo Abbey yesterday afternoon.

A man in his early 20s was arrested in Castlebar in connection with her death.

Gardaí have been quizzing him since his arrest last night.

He remains in custody at Castlebar Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Assistant state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis carried out a full post-mortem examination of Ms Staunton’s body at Mayo General Hospital today.

A Garda spokesman said: “The post-mortem has been completed and the results given to the investigation team who are now conducting a murder investigation.”

Forensic officers spent today examining the house where Ms Staunton, believed to be originally from Dublin, was found.
