Central Bank will not take criminal complaints over Anglo Tapes

The Central Bank said it will not make any criminal complaints over the Anglo Tapes.
The tapes, published the Irish and Sunday Independent, had raised concerns that the failed bank may have misrepresented its financial position when it sought financial support from the Central Bank in 2008.
However, the Central Bank said it has reviewed the tapes and said it has not identified any new issues of suspected criminal offences - and will not make any complaint to the Gardaí or Director of Corporate Enforcement.
The Environment Minister said that he is surprised at the Central Bank's decision not to take action over the Anglo Irish Bank tapes.
Minister Phil Hogan said that he accepts the decision may have been taken for legal reasons.
"I am surprised at that decision but I suppose there are legal reasons perhaps as well that the central bank would want to make that decision," he said.
"Because spreading all of that information in advance of legal cases that are before the courts early in the new year could jeopardise the cases
"The people of Ireland don't want to see anything done or said that would jeopardise potential prosecutions."
