Convicted killer brings court case against prison governor

A convicted killer, sanctioned for allegedly breaking prison rules, has brought a High Court action against the Governor of Wheatfield Prison.
Robert Egan of Dromheath Avenue, Mulhuddart, is serving a 12-year sentence for the manslaughter father-of-two Wayne Doherty in Dublin in 2009.
The court heard that Robert Egan’s partner has been barred "indefinitely" from visiting the jail after he was found to have received a prohibited item during two of her visits in June.
The 29-year-old claims the prison Governor made adverse findings against him based on CCTV footage of the incidents, which he was not allowed to view.
The sanctions imposed include a ban on phone calls, evening recreation and ordinary prison visits for 56 days.
Robert Egan has now brought legal proceedings challenging the decisions of the prison governor.
The court has lifted the sanctions until Friday when lawyers for the governor and the Justice Minister will be present to put forward their side of the case.
