Social Justice Ireland to unveil suggestions for budget 2014

The message from Social Justice Ireland today is that budget 2014 should end spending cuts.

The organisation is unveiling its own suggestions for next year's public finances.

Yesterday it was revealed to Senior Ministers that savings, needed to be achieved in the budget, have been reduced from €3bn to €2bn.

It is not yet clear if the money will be used to ease off on planned cuts and tax hikes, or if it will be used to fund a stimulus programme to get people back to work.

Dr Seán Healy, from Social Justice Ireland said that the ideal solution is to focus on a more equitable tax system.

"Low corporation would pay less than 6% of their profits in corporation," he said.

"We would also introduce a financial transaction tax, and look at a number of tax breaks that are in the system to ensure that there was a fairness in the context of those who have more pay more

"At the same time we would introduce a maximum effective income tax rate of 45%."
