Dundon applies to High Court for stay on murder trial

Limerick man John Dundon has applied to the High Court for a stay on his trial for the murder of Garryowen rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

The 30-year-old with a former address at Hyde Road, called a judge at the Special Criminal Court a 'big fat pig' last week after the court ruled that his trial could go ahead as scheduled next month.

The trial for the murder of 28-year-old Shane Geoghegan at Dooradoyle on November 9th, 2008 is due to start at the Special Criminal Court on the 4th June

His lawyers want the trial adjourned until next year as they have only recently been served with 26,000 pages of evidence, along with over 1,000 discs of CCTV footage.

They have said that it is not humanly possible to go through all the material ahead of the trial - material which gardaí took seven months to put together.

The Special Criminal Court last week refused to put the case back.

Dundon's lawyers are now asking the High Court to overturn that decision on the basis that the 29-year-old's right to a fair trial is in jeopardy.

The case will return to court tomorrow when lawyers for the DPP have been informed of this latest development.
