Titanic commemorations continue across the country

The commemoration of the centenary anniversary of the Titanic's ill-fated voyage continues this weekend, with a number of events planned.

Doctor Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who first discovered the Titanic's resting place in the North Atlantic in 1985, will be in Belfast, where he will give a memorial lecture today.

He will also be attending a number of other commemorative services, including an event at the new Titanic Memorial Garden at Belfast City Hall on Sunday.

A Requiem for the Lost Souls will be held at Saint Anne's Cathedral this evening.

A commemoration in music and film at the Waterfront Hall will feature Bryan Ferry, Joss Stone and the Ulster Orchestra.

It will be shown live on a big screen at Belfast City Hall, and broadcast live on BBC2.

At 2.20am this morning, a church bell was rung in the tiny Co Mayo parish of Addergoole.

They have done so every year since the sinking to remember the 11 young men and women they lost in the disaster.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Terry Shannon, is inviting the public to a family-friendly day at Blackrock Castle.

Visitors will be given a glimpse into the Titanic era, with archive footage, music and artefacts from 1912 all on display.
