Killer's family 'still under threat' after accidental shooting

A court has heard the family of Dublin killer Robert Egan remains under threat after he accidentally shot dead a father of two with possible IRA links.

The 27-year-old of Dromheath Avenue, Mulhuddart pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Wayne Doherty at Oakview Way, Hartstown on July 5, 2009.

Wayne Doherty intervened in a fight and was shot dead as he tried to wrestle a sawn-off shotgun from Robert Egan.

The accused had shown up armed after an earlier row with a man at a christening party in a pub in Clonee.

The court heard that Egan later fled to Turkey. While he was away, his brother Jason was shot dead.

The IRA said they killed him because he was a drug dealer but gardaí believe it was retaliation for the death of Wayne Doherty, who was buried with all the trappings of a paramilitary funeral.

Robert Egan will be sentenced for manslaughter on Thursday.
