Man threw woman over top rail of Dublin bus

A heavily intoxicated woman was thrown over the top railing of a double decker bus after becoming involved in violent row with another group of passengers, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has heard.

Conor Kenny (aged 20) of Cromlech Fields, Ballybrack received a suspended sentence for his part in the incident. He pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at Frascati Road, Blackrock on October 31, 2009.

Garda Ronan Kennedy told Mr Damian Colgan BL, prosecuting, that Kenny’s victim had drank a large amount of alcohol and got sick on the top deck of a Dublin bus travelling through Blackrock into the city centre.

Gda Kennedy agreed with Mr Colgan that the woman was “worse for wear”.

A group of passengers started laughing and “slagging” her and she threw a plastic bottle of water at them.

CCTV footage from the bus showed that the woman then went over to the group and became involved in a physical struggle.

The court heard that after she kicked another person in the back Kenny’s girlfriend started fighting with her.

When the woman threw a punch at Kenny’s girlfriend, Kenny grabbed her and pulled her over the upper barrier of the stairwell. She then went head first over the barrier and landed downstairs. The court heard she suffered “bumps and bruises” as a result of the fall.

Mr Michael Bowman BL, defending, said his client was “sickened” by his actions and offered €400 to the victim as a gesture of his remorse.

Judge Martin Nolan imposed a suspended sentence of six months.
