A 41-year-old man has been accused of conning a Dublin woman out of €55,000.
Brendan Madden, with an address at Liffey Hall, Newbridge, Co. Kildare was charged today with two counts under Section Six of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
He is accused of deception and inducing the woman to withdraw €25,000 and €30,000 from her account at an AIB branch, in Dublin, on June 16, 2008 and on November 5, 2007 with intention of making a gain for himself or another.
Garda Tara Dolan of Mountjoy station told Judge Aeneas McCarthy at Dublin District Court that the defendant, who is unemployed, was arrested this morning.
He was brought to the Bridewell Garda station in Dublin and “made no reply to the charges after caution”.
“There is a lot of money involved in the two charges,” Gda Dolan told Judge McCarthy.
She also said that the DPP had directed “trial on indictment” and there was no objection to bail.
The court heard that the defendant “is not working since November, since this case arose”.
Judge McCarthy granted legal aid to the defendant and remanded him on bail in his own bond of €1,000.
He will appear again on October 4 next when he is to be served with a book of evidence.
