Dundalk teen dies following street attack

Tests will be carried out today on the body of a teenager who died in hospital after a street brawl.

The 18-year-old victim, named locally as Niall Dorr, was left fighting for his life after a row involving a group of youths.

Two men in their early 20s have been arrested over the incident on Castle Road, Dundalk, on Wednesday night.

Mr Dorr, who received serious head injuries during the attack, died in Louth County Hospital last night surrounded by his family, including parents David and Veronica.

Friends paid tribute to the dead teen on the social networking site Facebook.

“R.I.P Dorr, One Of The Nicest People I Knew. Cant Believe I’ll Never See You Again.” said one.

A garda spokesman appealed for anyone who may have been in the Castle Road area between 9pm and 9.30pm, or anyone with information on the attack, to contact Dundalk garda station.

“Gardaí would particularly like to speak to a motorist who reported the incident to a passing garda patrol car,” he added.

The altercation happened about half an hour’s walk from the teenager’s home in Avondale Park.

The scene was cordoned off for a forensic examination and gard0í carried out door-to-door inquiries throughout yesterday.

The suspects were being questioned at Dundalk garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1884.

Senator Mark Dearey, who grew up near the scene of the attack, said residents in the quiet part of the town were stunned.

“This is just a dreadful shock. It’s an appalling incident,” he said.

“Even during the worst of the Troubles we had a peaceful time of it around here.”
