Irishman jailed indefinitely in UK for cleaver attack and rape

A career criminal who attacked a former friend with a meat cleaver before tying him up and raping a woman in the same flat was jailed indefinitely for public protection today.

Irishman Adrian Greene, 29, was told he must serve at least four and a half years before being considered for release and may remain in jail indefinitely.

Further details of Greene's Irish connection are not known at this stage.

Judge Deborah Taylor said Greene, who was on the run following a previous offence, was “violent and out of control” as he carried out the sustained attack on the man, who cannot be named, on November 23 last year.

He poses a significant risk to the public of serious harm and has a string of previous convictions for burglary and wounding with intent, Southwark Crown Court in central London heard.

Greene carried out the attack at the flat in Caledonian Road, north London, in revenge following a fight earlier that day, the court was told.

Greene attacked the victim with a meat cleaver before tying him up in the bedroom with cables cut from the iron and the vacuum cleaner, forcing him to reveal his Pin number.

He also got his younger brother, Darren, 23, to pass him more cables later in the attack.

Greene then raped the woman, who had been visiting the man, at knifepoint before escaping with £500 in cash.

The judge told Greene he used a knife for sexual gain and had shown no remorse for his crimes.

Greene was convicted of false imprisonment, actual bodily harm, robbery and two counts of rape following a trial in May.

Darren Greene was convicted of false imprisonment and jailed for 14 months, but he is expected to be released imminently, having already served half of his sentence on remand.
