Survey: Irish drivers less likely to get speeding ticket

A new international survey has shown that Irish drivers are still getting away with breaking speed limits.

Motorists here are 14 times less likely to get a speeding ticket than in the Netherlands because of the absence of an extensive network of speed cameras.

The report, compiled by the European Transport Safety Council, found one-in-three Irish drivers broke the speed limit on single carriageway national roads - where most fatal crashes occur.

The agency also strongly backed the plan by the Transport Minister Noel Dempsey to further reduce the legal blood-alcohol level.
