Commissioner: Gardaí following definite line of inquiry into Limerick killing
Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said the force is following significant and definite lines of inquiry into the latest murder in Limerick.
A bread delivery man was shot dead at a petrol station in the city at 6.30am this morning.
He has been named locally as 35-year-old Daniel Treacy, a father of two.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested as part of the investigation.
This afternoon the mayor of Limerick Councillor Kevin Kiely called for internment of known gang criminals, claiming laws introduced so far are not working.
Commissioner Murphy said every resource is being used to tackle such crimes.
"I can very much understand where the mayor is coming from when an atrocious crime like this is committed," Commissioner Murphy said.
"For me, I have to keep my people focussed and that's what we are doing.
"We have previously deployed the Emergency Response Unit and now the Regional Support Unit, which can be armed in certain situations, as well as other units.
"Certainly from a Garda perspective we are doing all in our power."
It is understood gardaí are hunting a second suspect.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen meanwhile described the latest murder as "appalling" but said it would not be appropriate for him to comment on the matter of internment while an investigation is ongoing.
"I very much regret the fact that another appalling murder has taken place," Mr Cowen said.
He said he had spoken to the Garda Commissioner on matter and reiterated that gardaí had definite lines of inquiry, and were pursuing them.
