State rejects Cork man's manslaughter plea

A 49-year-old man has pleaded guilty to killing a 60-year-old woman after detaining her without her consent in Co Cork last year.

Oliver Hayes of Clancool Terrace, Bandon, pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Anne Corcoran on a date unknown between January 19 and January 21 2009.

Counsel for the DPP told the Central Criminal Court that this plea was not accepted and a jury of five women and seven men was sworn in to try the accused for murder.

Hayes pleaded guilty to intentionally or recklessly detaining the woman from Maulnaskimlehane, Kilbrittain near Bandon without her consent on the same dates.

He also admitted five counts of stealing cash from her and one count of attempting to steal from her at banks in the area.

These offences included him stealing €600 on each of five occasions on January 21, 22, 23 and 24 at AIB branches in Bandon and Innishannon. The attempt to steal from her occurred on January 20 at the Bank of Ireland in Bandon.

The trial before Mr Justice Paul Carney will begin on Thursday and is expected to last two weeks.
