Arrests made at Apprentice Boys march
Approximately 20 people were arrested today during the Apprentice Boys of Derry parade.
Police said while the parade passed peacefully, officers have been since been responding to sporadic incidents which included stones, missiles and a number of petrol bombs being thrown.
A significant quantity of alcohol â including 578 glasses, bottles and cans - was also seized throughout the day.
Witnesses said that in the Magazine Street area of Derry one officer was forced to use CS gas spray when he was surrounded by a large group of people while a man was being arrested.
Tourists in a nearby hotel also looked on as several petrol bombs were also thrown at police.
Police said 4,000 Apprentice Boys and 130 bands took part in the annual parade to commemorate the Relief of Derry.
The PSNI thanked those who worked to help ensure the parade passed off without major incident.
Superintendent Paul McCormill said: âWe are pleased that the parade itself passed off well and would thank everyone who worked towards this.â
Police continue to monitor a number of areas.
Jim Brownlee, Governor of the Apprentice Boys of Derry Association, said the 320th annual commemoration should be a peaceful and enjoyable for its members, guests and for the citizens of the city.
âThere are those who take part, those who watch, and those who choose to ignore the day,â he said.
âIt is that freedom to choose that is an essential element of civil and religious liberty for which the Siege Heroes fought so hard.â
Mr Brownlee said there had been incidents at the start and end of the day to try and disrupt the celebrations.
âNo louts, regardless of age, are going to change our course or diminish in any way our efforts to make a significant contribution to building a better future for all,â he added.
