Son held over father's death
A 22-year-old man was arrested today over the death of his father.
James McInerney was found dead at his Midlands home late on Wednesday night and his son detained at the scene.
Gardai said officers arrived at the house in Lacey Avenue, Templemore, Co Tipperary at around 10.40pm and discovered the 56-year-old’s body.
It is believed the middle-aged man had suffered a violent assault.
Mr McInerney’s 22-year-old son was taken into custody and brought to Templemore Garda Station for questioning.
Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the killing.
It is understood Mr McInerney was a settled Traveller who was well-known in the town and did odd jobs in the local area.
After his body was discovered gardaí immediately sealed off the property for a full forensic examination.
Detectives are waiting until the results of a post mortem are known before revealing how the man died.
State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy was flown to the crime scene via helicopter and is expected to carry out the examination at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Nenagh.
Publican and Independent councillor Eddie Moran said the death had stunned the community.
“People are shocked around the town,” he said.
The arrested man can be held for up to 24 hours although gardaí said that can be extended if required.
He was being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
