Probable case of swine flu in Ireland
A man who lives in the east of the country has a probable case of swine flu, health chiefs confirmed tonight.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said the adult male had recently returned home from Mexico.
“This is a probable case which is likely to be positive,” he said.
Health officials stressed Ireland was prepared for a possible outbreak of the virus and had stockpiled enough drugs and masks to tackle any outbreak.
All the people the man has been in contact will receive anti-viral treatment, Dr Holohan told a news briefing.
Professor Bill Hall, chairman of the National Pandemic Influenza Expert Group, said he was awaiting official test results.
The man went to see his GP within hours of returning home.
“This is not a surprise to us,” added Dr Holohan. “The person is being treated in accordance with WHO protocols.”
