Real IRA suspect bailed

A Real IRA suspect who was arrested after the discovery of pipe bombs in Dublin was granted bail by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin today.

The pipe bombs discovery was made during garda investigations into dissident republican activity and an Irish Army bomb disposal team was called to deal with the components found at a flat in Phibsboro.

Ciaran Cahill (aged 35), of Glenville Drive, Blanchardstown was charged on Tuesday with the unlawful possession of five pipe bombs at Ulster St., Phibsboro on March 26 last.

He was also charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on March 29.

Today the court granted Cahill bail on an independent surety of €20,000 and his own bond of €1,000.

He was also ordered to sign on daily at Blanchardstown Garda Station, to surrender his passport, to live at home and not to associate with anyone convicted of or charged with a scheduled offence.

The court remanded Cahill until the end of May.
