Dublin man charged over pipe bombs

A Dublin man was charged at the Special Criminal Court today with possession of explosives following the garda discovery of pipe bombs in Phibsboro at the weekend.

Ciaran Cahill (aged 35), of Glenville Drive, Blanchardstown was charged with the unlawful possession of five pipe bombs at Ulster St, Phibsboro on March 26.

He was also charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA, on March 29.

Detective Garda Kieran Regan gave evidence of arresting Cahill at 1.26 pm today on suspicion of the possession of an explosive substance at Ulster St, Phibsboro and on suspicion of membership of the IRA.

He said that Cahill replied that he was not a member of the IRA after he was cautioned.

Cahill was remanded in custody until Friday when a bail application is expected to be made.

Two other people, a man and a woman, who were arrested at Ulster St on Sunday, have been released without charge.
