Top ministers seeking leniency for convicted criminals

A number of serving cabinet ministers reportedly made representations to the Department of Justice on behalf of convicted criminals in 2006 and 2007.

Reports this morning say documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that TDs and Senators sought special treatment for dozens of prisoners during the period.

Those making representatives ministers Brian Lenihan, Dermot Ahern, Willie O'Dea and Eamon O Cuiv, as well as former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue.

Fianna Fáil Kerry North TD Tom McEllistrim reportedly made six separate representations on behalf of prisoners convicted of murder, drug-dealing, drink-driving and causing serious harm.

Last year, political parties floated the idea of introducing an official protocol to stop TDs and Senators lobbying on behalf of criminals after Tony Killeen was forced to apologise for making representations on behalf of a convicted rapist.

However, it was abandoned because TDs claimed it would prevent them from making legitimate inquiries on behalf of prisoners and their families.
