Petty criminals to have slate wiped clean under new bill

People with court convictions of less than six months in jail may be about to get a fresh start at life.

A new bill is to be introduced in the Oireachtas which aims to wipe the slate clean for petty criminals who have not offended over a five-year period.

It will not cover sex-related offences.

Fianna Fáil TD for Dun Laoghaire Barry Andrews, who is sponsoring the bill, said that if it is passed into law, certain individuals will have a new start with the Gardaí and the Courts.
