FG challenges Gormley to block Poolbeg incinerator

Fine Gael is to introduce a Dáil motion this week calling on Minister for the Environment John Gormley to scrap plans for a waste incinerator in the Poolbeg area of Dublin Bay.

The motion is Fine Gael's latest challenge to the Greens following their decision to enter government with Fianna Fáil.

Mr Gormley, a local Green Party TD, was one of more than 2,000 people to lodge objections to the incinerator when it was in the planning stages.

Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd says the vast majority of local residents voted for candidates opposed to the planned Poolbeg facility and is challenging Mr Gormley to act in their interests.

Last week, the Greens voted against a Fine Gael motion calling for the scrapping of the controversial co-location plan, even though the party's own election manifesto was highly critical of the project.
