Tipperary’s three-time All-Ireland SHC winner Séamus Kennedy has confirmed his inter-county retirement.

St Mary’s, Clonmel man Kennedy (33) played key roles in the county’s All-Ireland successes in 2016, ’19 and ‘25. He was an All-Star nominee in 2016.

In his debut season 10 years ago, he was a regular half-back, beginning the final win over Kilkenny as he did three years later, scoring two points against The Cats.

Kennedy, an All-Ireland winning minor footballer in 2011, came off the bench in the 2025 victory over Cork. The victory was a particularly poignant one for the dual player having torn his cruciate against Limerick in a National League game in March of the previous year.

On his club’s website, Kennedy announced: “After 11 years playing with Tipperary, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from inter-county hurling. Wearing the blue and gold jersey was a dream come true and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so.

“We’re lucky to have incredible people in Tipperary and I feel very privileged to have played and worked alongside so many top-class players, managements and backroom teams.” Kennedy thanked his team-mates, managers, coaches, the county board, supporters clubs, team sponsors and the Gaelic Players Association as well as the supporters.

He hailed his two clubs, St Mary’s and Clonmel Commercials, wife Orlaith, parents Terence and Frances, sister Méabh, brother Seán and extended family. He concluded his statement by wishing Tipperary the best for 2027 and beyond.

The county board described Kennedy as “an integral part of many memorable days for Tipperary GAA and has left a lasting impression through his dedication and service to the county.” His football club Commercials paid tribute. “As a club we have been so proud to have Séamus represent us and the town of Clonmel so immensely on the Tipperary Hurling Panel.

“An extraordinary achievement with three All-Ireland medals along the way. This is a testament to the talent, hard work, commitment and dedication he has shown throughout his intercounty career.

“Séamus is a fantastic role model to so many, both on and off the field, and has represented himself, his family, our club and community with great pride.

“We congratulate Séamus on a wonderful intercounty career and thank him for the memories, achievements and pride he has brought to us all. You have done your club and county proud!”
