New guide to beat exam stresses

The stresses of exams were highlighted today as health experts urged students to take care of themselves during the Leaving and Junior Certificate.

Long hours spent cramming combined with the pressure to do well can cause an increase in ailments such as headaches, stomach upsets, diarrhoea or constipation.

Conditions such as insomnia, eczema, asthma and acne also flare up.

The Irish Pharmaceutical Union (IPU) published a safe code for teenagers designed to keep them healthy during exam time.

Keith O’Hourihane, IPU spokesman, said pressure and stress manifests itself in a number of ways, both mentally and physically.

“We would encourage students and/or their parents to talk to their local pharmacist if they have any concerns or want to take precautions in advance of the exams starting,” he said.

“Coping with the exams is stressful enough without the added pressure of dealing with uncomfortable symptoms that can be distracting and upsetting.”

The IPU warned teenagers can end up frustrated by insomnia as they find it difficult to switch off from exam preparation.

The body also said long periods spent reading or working on a computer can lead to discomfort from tired, red eyes while long periods of time spent at a desk can cause muscular and joint pains.

The Safe Code is designed to keep problems like these at bay and it includes advice such as drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration and headaches, study in well ventilated rooms and take regular breaks.

Caffeine-laden stimulant drinks such as coffee and energy drinks cause dehydration, the IPU warned.

Avoid too much sun as it disrupts concentration levels. Eat small amounts regularly, take some light exercise, don’t study in bed and set aside time for relaxation.
