Gardaí treating Lucan road death as tragic accident

Gardaí investigating the death of a Dublin man who was hit by a car driven by an off-duty garda say they are treating the case as a tragic accident.

Twenty-year-old Derek O'Toole was lying on the road when he was run over the by the car in the Lucan area on Sunday morning.

His family have been severely critical of the garda handling of the case, saying they have been kept in dark about the details of the incident and were not initially told the car involved was being driven by a garda.

They also say someone within the Force had claimed to the media that the victim was "known to gardaí", when this was not true.

Mr O'Toole's family have expressed concern that he may have been assaulted before he was hit by the car, but the Gardaí say preliminary test results showed no indication of an assault.

However, it remains unclear why he was lying on the road.

The Gardaí have launched a full criminal investigation into the case and say a file will be sent to the DPP when all the facts are uncovered.
