A branch of the German supermarket chain Aldi has been destroyed in a major fire on the outskirts of west Dublin.

The fire at the Newlands Cross branch was reported at around 11pm and firefighters spent two hours battling to bring it under control.

Nobody was injured, but the supermarket was completely destroyed.

The Fire Service and the Gardaí are due to begin examining the site this morning in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze.
