A comprehensive study has reportedly identified major flaws with sections of Dublin's Luas system just 18 months after the introduction of the much-praised tram service.

Reports this morning said the study, commissioned by the company that built the Luas infrastructure, had found deficiencies in the bonding material used beneath the city sections of both lines.

This has reportedly caused fissures and cracks to open up, allowing water to penetrate the load-carrying system.

This morning's reports said around 6.4 kilometres of the Tallaght line and 1.3 kilometres of the Sandyford line were affected and the experts behind the study were recommending urgent repair works to ensure long-term safety.
