Call for implementation of Western Rail Corridor
Tourism authorities are calling on the Government to address the serious lack of trains in the west of Ireland.
The number of tourists visiting in the west continues to drop, and authorities claim it is because it is impossible for visitors to travel around the west.
There are no rail-links to Cork, Limerick or Galway airports, and some counties such as Leitrim and Donegal have no rail services whatsoever.
Colman O'Ragallaigh, spokesman for the West On Track lobby group, said today: “The reopening of the Western Rail Corridor is absolutely essential for the development of tourism in the West. We need to utilise the infrastructure that is there, bring it back into service, and people will flock to it (the West).”
