Govt warned against complacency as HIV cases drop
The Government is being urged to continue its efforts to prevent the spread of HIV.
Figures published this week show an 11% drop in new infections in Ireland last year.
But a major conference in Dublin has heard that we must not become complacent.
Specialist on the virus, Professor William Powderly of UCD, says the figures reflect a stabilisation rather than improvement of the situation.
'We're seeing new cases in every group, we're seeing new cases in gay men, we're seeing new cases in heterosexual transmission in Ireland and we're seeing new cases in immigrant's from countries where HIV is very prevalent," he said.
