Ahern: Gardaí who shot raiders had no other option
The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said he believes the gardaí who shot dead two armed raiders in north Co Dublin this morning had no other option.
Asked about the matter while opening a wind farm in Co Wicklow, Mr Ahern said he believed the armed officers were acting in self-defence.
"The gardaí called for people to lay down their arms, shots were fired and then the gardaí responded," he said.
The Gardaí have still not confirmed if the raiders involved in the incident fired any shots and reports this afternoon suggested that the armed officers may have been the only ones who discharged their weapons.
