Fathers protest over child access problems

Up to 200 men protested today to highlight the treatment of fathers in the family law courts.

The demonstration on O’Connell Bridge in Dublin’s city centre was a protest at what they claim is unfair treatment.

The Unmarried and Separated Fathers of Ireland group said they organised the gathering to point out the problems men face trying to get access to their children.

The fathers’ rights group has claimed constitutional reform is well overdue to create a protective and fair judicial system.

The group is campaigning for changes to the existing legislation on Family Law, and to the structure and behaviour of the legal profession and judiciary.

They are looking for a total review of family law to create a child-centred approach, a reform of in-camera court rules and compulsory mediation ahead of any court cases to decide on family matters.

The rights group has also called for specific training for the legal profession in family law.
