Services are inadequate, say breast cancer campaigners

Genetic breast cancer services in Ireland are underfunded and inadequate, according to Europa Donna Ireland, The Irish Breast Cancer Campaign.

Several experts from hospitals around Ireland echoed this view at a public information meeting this evening.

"Women with one of the two breast cancer genes have an 80% chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime and these families need extensive counselling and support, as well as access to testing for those who wish it," said Deirdre O’Connell, Chair of Europa Donna Ireland.

"There are also issues around employment and insurance that we would like to see addressed in legislation" said O'Connell.
