The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) has said the publication of a report into the Soham murders in Britain has major implications for child protection in Ireland.

The report, which was published today, severely criticised failures in the British system for vetting people who work with children.

However, the ISPCC said today that the British system was actually much better developed than that currently in place in Ireland.

It said immediate action was needed to ensure that a comprehensive vetting system was devised and implemented as soon as possible.
