Ahern pays tribute as Cox stands down

European Parliament president Pat Cox’s contribution to Ireland’s EU presidency was outstanding, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern claimed today.

The Munster MEP announced in his final address in Strasbourg as President of the Parliament that he would not be contesting next month’s European elections.

As politicians paid tribute to his work Mr Ahern, in his role as president of the European Council, said it had been a pleasure to work with Mr Cox.

The Taoiseach said: “Mr Cox had always acted in the best interests of his Munster constituents in his role as a European parliamentarian.

“I wish Mr Cox well in whichever path he may choose in the future.”

There is speculation that Mr Cox’s decision may be part of a bid by him to become Ireland’s next EU commissioner.

However, the current commissioner David Byrne, who is in charge of health and consumer protection, is also believed to be keen to remain in Brussels.

Labour Senator Brendan Ryan paid tribute to Cox’s lengthy time as an representative of Munster

Senator Ryan said: “Pat Cox’s achievement in the Parliament shows that it is possible for an effective MEP to make a difference.

“I never doubted his ability, his energy or his commitment to the people of Munster.”

Mr Cox thanked his supporters in Munster for the role they played in electing him to the position.
