Trimble under pressure to retract slur on murdered solicitors

Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble has come under pressure to retract allegations he made yesterday about murdered solicitors Pat Finucane and Rosemary Nelson.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Trimble clearly suggested that the two lawyers were involved in terrorism.

The Finucane and Nelson families, along with the SDLP, have demanded that the UUP leader withdraw the allegations immediately.

Pat Finucane’s son, Michael, said Mr Trimble should produce evidence to back up his claim or retract it.

Eunan Magee, Rosemary Nelson’s brother, said the UUP leader seemed incapable of differentiating between a solicitor and her clients.

The SDLP’s Alex Atwood said Mr Trimble’s remarks were insulting, inaccurate, outrageous and dishonest.
