Real IRA prisoner to give evidence to Saville Inquiry

A Real IRA prisoner serving 18 years for possession of arms was released from jail today to give evidence to the Saville Inquiry in Derry.

Ciaran MacLochainn is expected to tell the inquiry that he was with his friend, Gerry Donaghy, when he was shot dead on Bloody Sunday, and there was no way he could have been carrying nail bombs.

Photographs of Mr Donaghy’s body taken by the British army showed nail bombs protruding from his trouser and jacket pockets, but several witnesses who attended to his body said he was not carrying the bombs when he was shot dead.

His family has claimed the devices were planted by British soldiers.
