Saville Inquiry hears evidence from anonymous IRA witness

A former member of the Provisional IRA has told the Saville Inquiry how he confronted an Official IRA gunman who opened fire on British soldiers after they had shot Catholic civilians on Bloody Sunday almost 32 years ago.

The witness, identified only as PIRA 1, said he confronted the gunman at Columbcille Court in the Bogside area of Derry. He said he felt angry that the gunman had opened fire because he believed the Official and Provisional IRA had agreed not to take any action during the Catholic civil rights march in the Bogside on January 30, 1972.
