The Irish Family Planning Association has said the number of young people seeking emergency contraception is higher around the holiday season than at any other time of the year.

The association says this is due to excessive intake of alcohol, and also reports an increase in the number of crisis pregnancies after Christmas.

Catherine Heany, Chief Executive of the association, says women see the 'morning-after pill' as an acceptable method of contraception but reminds those who are thinking of engaging in casual sex to think twice and take proper precautions, including using a condom.
