Dept of Education discriminated against teacher

A rights commissioner has found the Department of Education discriminated against a part-time teacher.

The Co Sligo teacher, who was job-sharing, was only paid half of the supervision and substitution allowance for the 2000-2001 school year, despite doing the same amount of work as her full-time colleagues.

The case was referred to the Rights Commissioner under legislation protecting part-time workers.

ASTI Equality Officer Máire Mulcahy said it set a precedent for others doing the same sort of job.
