Gardai release man held over hit-and-run
Gardai tonight released without charge a man arrested following the death of a 16-year-old girl in a suspected hit-and-run incident.
The body of Emma Markey of Braddocks, Clontibret was found on the side of a road in Tullycorbet, Co Monaghan at around 4am this morning.
Police arrested the man at about 9am and he was questioned for most of the day before being released.
The incident brought the number of people killed on the country’s roads overnight to three, with another woman left critically ill.
An 18-year-old Dublin man died following an accident in Dublin yesterday evening.
Liam McCallon, from Jobstown in Tallaght, died in hospital last night from the injuries he received when the motorbike he was riding collided with a car on the city’s Lower Rathmines Road.
Meanwhile, a 71-year-old woman also died from the injuries she sustained in a road accident in Co Galway yesterday evening.
A 61-year-old woman remains critically ill in hospital following the collision between the car they were travelling in and an articulated truck.
The accident occurred near Merlin Park on the Galway to Oranmore road shortly before 5pm yesterday evening.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.
