Two men charged with serious Cork assault

Two men were today arrested and charged with a serious assault in Cork city which left the victim on a life support machine this January.

Paul Sheehan, aged 19, of Arderrin Way, The Glen, Cork and Ross Stapleton, aged 20, of no fixed address, were formally arrested by Det Sgt Gerard O'Mahony at Cork District Court, Anglesea St today.

They were each charged with assault causing serious harm to Christian Scully, aged 28, at Sober Lane, Sullivan's Quay, Cork on January 28 this year.

Det Sgt O'Mahony said Mr Scully had been on life support at Cork University Hospital since that date.

He objected to bail being granted to Stapleton because he did not have a fixed address.

Judge Uinsin MacGruairc rejected the bail application by free legal aid solr, Joseph Cuddigan, and remanded Stapleton in custody until Sept 11.

Sheehan, who was represented on free legal aid by Diarmuid Kelleher solr, was remanded in custody until the same date.

In his case, bail was set at €1,000 and an independent surety of €3,000.

Both defendants were dressed casually, Stapleton wearing a dark T-shirt, while Sheehan wore a Celtic jersey. When Sgt O'Mahony charged them, and cautioned them, the defendants made no reply.

It is anticipated that the case will be further adjourned next week and ultimately go on trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, possibly before the end of the year.
