Brennan facing calls to halt work on Port Tunnel
Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is facing calls today to halt construction on the Dublin Port Tunnel.
Around 20% of trucks will reportedly be unable to use the tunnel because of its internal height limits.
Dublin City Council said the tunnel conforms to regulations at 4.65m, but the Dublin Port Transport Umbrella Group said it should be higher.
Jerry Kiersey, the chairman of the group, said it has received expert advice that the height of the tunnel can be increased if the decision is taken now.
"[The tunnel is] something we’ve been campaigning for for 20 years," he said.
"We don’t want our trucks on the streets of Dublin, we want them through something similar to the Port Tunnel.
"Now we’ve finally got it, we find it’s wrong and we’ve been given every sort of excuse under the sun and none of it adds up."
