FG welcomes publication of Nice bill
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has welcomed the publication of the bill to provide for a second referendum on the Nice Treaty.
Mr Kenny said in a statement: "The proposed constitutional amendment, if passed would create legal certainty that a referendum must be held if, in the future, the European Council was to decide to establish a common European defence.
The statement continued: "I believe this amendment should be supported as it will ensure the Irish people will have the final say if decision at EU level in favour of a common defence were to evolve.
"Many of the people who voted against the Treaty last year did so as a protest against various aspects of European policy, most of which have nothing to with the Nice Treaty.
"On this occasion the Government must mount a far more convincing information campaign to explain the provisions of Nice so that voters can make an informed decision.
Mr Kenny also recommended the Government undertake an 'immediate re-evaluation of the way in which European Union directives and policies are implemented by the State'.
Mr Kenny also welcomed the establishment of the Committee on European Affairs.
