Police in the North were forced to fire shots over a mob in order to prevent a further outbreak of violence.

The incident took place in Coleraine, Co Derry just hours after 10 police officers were injured in rioting in east Belfast.

A crowd surrounded a police vehicle that was called to the scene when two youths were chased into a house and dragged back out by a group of men.

The crowd then attempted to drag an officer for the vehicle and threw stones and bottles at the officers. Earlier today, 10 police officers were injured in Belfast. Nine officers were hurt when a blast bomb hit their jeep and the tenth officer was struck by a brick.

The police were sent into the area after Loyalist and Nationalist mobs starting throwing stones and other missiles at each other, 35 petrol bombs were found in a follow-up search.
