A Kilkenny youth, who tried to kill a man twice in the same night, has been sentenced to imprisonment for nine and a half years.

20-year-old Thomas O'Grady had pleaded 'not guilty' to the accusations and had refused to express any remorse for the crimes.

The victim of the attack, a local man, Paul Barry, was forced to have both his legs amputated after Mr O'Grady allegedly tried to set fire to him and beat him until he was unconscious in a field on the outskirts of Kilkenny City.

A jury at the Central Criminal Court convicted Mr O'Grady on two counts of attempted murder following a late night drinking session.
