Cancer victim to receive treatment

A Dublin mother suffering from cancer who took her case to the High Court in a bid to obtain a hospital bed has been told that she will receive treatment from next Monday.

Jeanette Byrne from Finglas requires five days of consistent chemotherapy, but was originally told no beds were available to accommodate her.

However, the Eastern Regional Health Authority told the court this afternoon that it had been assured by the Mater Private Hospital that she would begin treatment on Monday next at the hospital's expense.

It also undertook to admit her to the Mater Public if a bed became available before Monday.

Mr Justice Kelly presiding, said one would have to have a heart of stone not to sympathise with Ms Byrne's plight.

He adjourned the case until Monday afternoon so as to ensure there would be no slippage in the undertaking given.
