Robinson to stay on at UN for extra year
The United Nations General Assembly is expected to officially extend Mary Robinson’s term as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for another year.
Her four-year term expires in September, although the former Irish president had resigned her post in March.
She then changed her mind after insistence from Secretary General Kofi Annan and will now stay on for another 12 months.
The extension is expected to be approved by the UN General Assembly when it meets today.
Yesterday, UNESCO announced that Mrs Robinson was the winner of its peace prize, offered in memory of former Ivory Coast president Houphouet-Boigny, for her work in the field of human rights.
